Lazu War Crab - Monstrous coastal crustacean

MONSTROUS

While these creatures cannot claim to be the largest or most powerful in the Veiled Realm, Lazu War Crabs remain a formidable species. Fully grown specimens can reach a height of twelve feet and are highly manoeuvrable. Twin white eye stalks protrude from a grey-green outer shell, allowing the crabs to see clearly underwater, though not quite so well above the surface. For defence, vicious spines and layers of interlocking armour keep them well protected, while a savage, barbed tail and four razor-sharp pincers are usually enough to fend off even the most determined aggressor.

FEEDING

The preferred habitat for a Lazu War Crab is just below the waves where they can scour the seabed for fish, eels, and other smaller crustaceans. They are equally at ease scavenging in rock pools and scouring the rugged shallows found around the coast. They are not opposed to leaving the water entirely in search of a meal. Sea lions basking in the sun or absent-minded livestock straying too close to the shoreline risk being dragged beneath the surface. Lazu War Crabs will also consume kelp and coral when food is scarce.

SIGHTINGS

Lazu War Crabs are especially abundant around the north-west coast of Karadas, particularly where the Crescent Peaks rise from the ocean. Here, hidden caves and dark crevices provide numerous opportunities to establish a lair; a sanctuary to rest and devour prey. Another location the creatures are known to exist is the headland close to Hollowshore, although the variant found here only grows to half the size of its western cousins. There have also been whispers that a dozen enormous, pale-blue war crabs are alive and well at the northern tip of the Unfathomed Lake. The rugged cliffs along this section of the lakeshore would certainly provide concealment and an agreeable environment. It is unknown whether Lazu War Crabs can survive for long periods in fresh water.

CAGED

A disturbing rumour comes from Tower Town, where a specimen is said to be held in captivity by a rather unpleasant Kajan merchant. Kroll—as the crime gang named the creature—is used for sport and disposing of traitors and rivals. The claims are yet to be verified for fear of retribution from the Kajan and his henchmen.
